Where has the Frozen Plasma (FP) come from?
Donor dogs have strict criteria to meet before consideration of being a donor for Frozen Plasma (FP). The vet will go through the following process with the donor dog prior to any donation going ahead:
- Undertake a physical examination of the dog and health history
- Fit and healthy
- Between one and 8 years old
- Weigh more than 25kg
- Have a good temperament
- Have never travelled abroad
- Not on any medication
After the blood is drawn, the blood sample is inspected and a unique reference number which relates to the dog's donor number is recorded. This means every unit of blood can be traced back to the donor dog. The Plasma is then frozen and is ready to be dispatched.
Canine Frozen Plasma (FP) is for use in puppies only.
Inspect before use. In case of accidental contact with skin, wash affected area thoroughly with warm soapy water. Care should be taken to avoid volume overload.
Storage: Frozen Plasma must be stored at -18C or below. A chest freezer is preferred due to the improved temperature stability offered. Freezers with a defrost cycle must not be used. The lower the storage temperature the more reliable the retention of the coagulation factors within the product.
Leakage: If leakage becomes apparent the entire pack must be discarded.
Shelf Life: Frozen Plasma has a shelf life of 5 years from the date of collection. The Product label indicates the expiry date.
Thawing: Remove carefully from the freezer. Allow the Plasma in the syringe to thaw at room temperature. Do not exceed the temperature of 37C during the thawing process. Do not use a microwave oven.
