The BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) test is used to check the hearing in dogs and cats. The tests checks to see if the brain responds to the clicking sound made.
Congenital deafness is a recognised problem in many dog breeds and those that mostly carrying the Piebald gene (white coated breeds) or Merle gene.

Merle coat colour; Shetland Sheepdog, Dappled Dachshund, Harlequin Great Dane & Old English Sheepdog.
The best age to have the test conducted is from 6 weeks of age. Adult dogs can be tested at anytime.
